- In a separate experiment, AWeber found out that popup forms delivered higher signups by as much as 1,375 percent compared to traditional forms.
Today, more marketers are looking at popup forms as a strategy to accelerate their email signups, newsletter subscriptions, and even sales. They are, however, encouraged to strike a balance between using popups too much or totally not.
In August 2016, Google warned sites with distracting popups of a lower ranking. This became effective on January 10, 2017. Google said websites with “intrusive interstitials” that detract mobile users may lose ranking power. This is because they would likely block most, if not all, of the page content, leading to a bad experience for the user, be it from a desktop or mobile.
Search Engine Journal’s report, however, clarified that Google will only give low rankings to sites with “intrusive interstitials” if they:

- It is not responding, making it difficult to be closed on a mobile
- It does not include a call-to-actionsuch as “Subscribe Here” and pops out of nowhere, surprising the mobile users.
While popups are generally effective in gaining public attention, marketers should still use them responsibly.
